Construction of the 800 mile Trans-Alaska pipeline started on Mar 27, 1975 and was finished May 31, 1977. The pipeline stretches from the North Slope oil fields to the Valdez Marine Terminal. To date over 13 BILLION barrels of oil have flowed through the 48 inch diameter pipe. I took these pictures ar the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Viewpoint on the Steese Highway 8.9 miles north of Fairbanks at one of the pipeline locations where the pipe is above ground. The site is a favorite of tourists (and some of us locals).
